This is the situation for many patients in Latin America who depend on the arrival of advanced medications to treat cancer or rare diseases. Undoubtedly, the wait for these medications can be long and filled with uncertainty.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Recently, the Latin American Federation of the Pharmaceutical Industry (FIFARMA), in collaboration with the research organization<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, the Latin American Federation of the Pharmaceutical Industry (FIFARMA), in collaboration with the research organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqvia.com\/\">IQVIA<\/a>, has published the second version of the study called FIFARMA W.A.I.T. Indicator 2023, an acronym that stands for \"Wait Indicator for Access to Innovative Therapies\"; a study that has brought to light new data on waiting times to access innovative medications for cancer and rare diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Unveiling Data with the FIFARMA W.A.I.T. Indicator 2023<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En su segunda edici\u00f3n, este estudio analiza la disponibilidad y el tiempo de acceso a 228 medicamentos para el c\u00e1ncer y enfermedades raras en ocho pa\u00edses de Am\u00e9rica Latina (Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, M\u00e9xico y Per\u00fa). Los hallazgos apuntan a que los pacientes deben esperar un promedio entre 1,9 y 4,5 a\u00f1os desde la aprobaci\u00f3n de estos medicamentos por la FDA (Administraci\u00f3n de Alimentos y Medicamento de EE.UU.)\u00a0 hasta la disponibilidad efectiva en sus pa\u00edses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that if a cancer medication is approved today in the United States, it may not be available to a patient in Latin America for up to four years. This can be too long, diminishing the life expectancy of millions of current and potential patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This delay reflects the urgent need to improve and expedite regulatory processes to accelerate the availability of innovative therapies in our region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Addressing the Medication Access Gap in Latin America<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the total medications studied (228), only 130 are available in some countries in Latin America, and of these, only 86 are accessible in all analyzed countries. This data further highlights the access gap in the region and the need for joint action to address this challenge.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9785dfd4e67655be90a05195aeea5fd7 wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Numbers Speak: Waiting Time in Specific Countries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Colombia, for example, from the time a medication is approved by the FDA, patients wait about 1,184 days (a little over three years) for it to be approved in their country. And that's not all; another 489 days must be added for it to be truly accessible to those who need it. In Mexico, the situation is even more prolonged: 210 days for the initial approval, followed by a surprising leap to 2,074 days (a little over five years) to achieve total availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These delays may be due to various factors, such as approval processes in each country, reimbursement systems, and other administrative aspects that, although necessary, end up prolonging the wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/59rjN4v3YIUYyz5O0kp1aNB3rBWqkjW88Kl7Zfg3VcKw3HEzESss8lAYNySTd2vRhNdwXBhtJ0wqPUScSHAvPgbWHLmIcJkrY4WhmgSIRDzLbF8oIkbF2EEivyyAXbwl5lCeXkiPHzECFYavMs0vvU0\" alt=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Challenge in Latin America: Reducing Waiting Times for Cancer Treatments<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-382a84239e47866c7f8a310bbd0884ec wp-block-paragraph\">The situation is critical, and although these numbers may seem discouraging, they are also a call to action. This report is not just for information but to motivate change, for all of us to collaborate and seek solutions. It's about improving the lives of millions of people, ensuring they have access to the latest and most effective treatments without having to wait for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ace7ad5b65b986ff24b467f6ecce07b2 wp-block-paragraph\">The FIFARMA W.A.I.T. Indicator 2023 clearly shows us the challenge ahead in Latin America: shortening waiting times for innovative cancer and rare disease treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ae17d40a1ce7fc3b9f2fa6c95b8aa30c wp-block-paragraph\">With this information, we can continue to encourage this urgent conversation to make the necessary changes and thus, provide hope and save lives.
