To ensure the health of world population, governments have implemented measures and restrictions that aim to reduce Coronavirus transmission and deaths. However, fake news and misinformation found on the internet can divert governments’ efforts.
For this effect, the Association of Pharmaceutical Research and Development Laboratories (AFIDRO) invited Diego Severiche, M.D. specialized in bioethics and pneumology, to expose myths and explain the truth behind COVID-19. On April 14, 2020, Severiche answered questions such as: Should I wear face masks? Do I have the flu or do I have coronavirus? Is there a home remedy to prevent infection?
In Colombia, according to Decree 417 of March 17, 2020, issued by the Presidency, it is estimated that almost 4 million people will have COVID-19. To this, we must add the lack of evidence in the country. For example, on April 9, 47,500 tests came to Bogotá for just over 7 million people (tests for 0.6% of the population). Additionally, according to Severiche, 25% of people having coronavirus, will have a negative test. In conclusion, there will be many infected people transmitting the disease, so the only mechanism we have at this time is effective prevention.
How do I know if I have coronavirus or a common flu? How do I know if I should go to the hospital?
There is no specific characteristic symptom of the virus, so it can easily be mistaken for a common flu. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, headaches, sore throat, vomiting, or nausea. If any of these symptoms appear, it is best to isolate yourself from your family and put on face masks.
If you have persistent fever, persistent, overwhelming cough that disrupts your sleep pattern, these are warning signs and you should seek medical advice.
What is the difference between the surgical, fabric, and N95 masks?
The fabric face mask is reusable, must be washed every 24 hours and must be 100% polyester.
The surgical mask should be worn with the blue cloth facing outward and should be discarded after 8 hours. Secretions and humidity of breathing cause it to lose effectiveness and the level of protection falls.
The N95 mask should be used exclusively by medical personnel and for people exposed to infected persons. It lasts from 3 to 7 days.
Is there a home remedy to prevent COVID-19?
There is no home or pharmacological remedy to prevent the disease. The closest thing to prevention is constant handwashing and the use of face masks.
If I am infected, how many days does the virus last in my body? Will I have immunity from now on?
The person should be isolated between 14 and 21 days. If symptoms worsen, you should go to a medical center. As for immunity, there are still no medium and long-term results since the virus emerged just four months ago. It is best if the patient is isolated and continues with protective measures.
Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are supposed to be prepared for any emergency, so why are people dying at them?
There is not a specific treatment for these disease. Every treatment is administered at this time is an experimental treatment and helps the patient’s body respond and control the virus. They are therapeutic measures, not curative.
If I am hypertensive / diabetic / asthmatic, but I have my disease under control, am I still a high-risk population?
If the pathology is controlled, it could have a better prognosis if infected with coronavirus, but it is still a high-risk population.
What recommendations are in place for the day the quarantine is over, and we can go outside?
People who must go out to work must continue with all the protective measures and return to their home as soon as the working day is over. Until a vaccine appears, there will be no social gatherings, parties, soccer games, or movies.
