How has the pandemic changed the Peruvian health system?
Impact on medical consultation
There are many physician specialties that have had to look for new ways to interact with the patient.
Prior to COVID-19, only 20% of physicians used a teleconsulting platform. During COVID-19, this percentage became 90% of physicians who began using this method to interact with patients. Also, in a post-COVID scenario, 82% of physicians believe they will continue to use remote consultation.
Impact on health care – consultation
13 million appointments were given jointly in the public and private sector in a regular quarter, but due to Covid-19 these appointments decreased by 80% and many of the appointments given after the quarantine included teleconsultation.
Impact on drug use
The pharmaceutical market (in millions of Peruvian soles) fell by 12% from 2019 to 2020, and the drop was of 43% in terms of purchased units. The most affected area was that of public institutions, which decreased by 61% in millions of Peruvian soles, and by 86% in units. On the other hand, the retail market saw a 9% increase in millions of Peruvian soles and by 8% in units.
Monthly drug spending
The trend in 2020 has been to purchase products related to COVID-19 (analgesics, antibiotics, azithromycin, ivermectin). Retail is the one that shows an increasing trend in both covid and non-covid products. The private market maintains a stable behavior.
There was a decrease in monthly government spending on medicines in both covid and non-covid products.
